A smoke detector is a sensor designed to detect ambient airborne smoke particulates as an indicator of fire. Unlike standalone smoke alarms (which feature built-in sirens and operate independently), commercial and industrial smoke detectors are typically connected directly to a central Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP). When smoke is identified, the detector sends a digital or analog signal to the panel, which then coordinates building-wide sirens, strobe lines, and emergency protocols.
