  • Category : Fire Detection System
  • Sub Category : N/A
  • Details : A sounder strobe (also known as a horn strobe) is an essential notification appliance in a fire alarm system that provides dual-sensory warnings during an emergency. By combining a loud audible alarm (sounder) with a flashing light (strobe), these devices ensure that building occupants who are deaf, hard of hearing, or working in high-noise environments are instantly alerted to danger, complying with international accessibility and safety standards like the NFPA 72 and EN54.
Key Technical Features
Dual-Tone & Synchronization
  • Audible Output: Most modern sounders offer selectable tones (such as Continuous, March Time, or the standard Temporal 3 fire pattern). Sound output typically ranges from 85 to 100+ dBA at 10 feet, ensuring audibility over ambient room noise.
  • Strobe Intensity & Sync: Flash intensity is measured in candela (cd), with settings ranging from 15cd for small rooms up to 185cd for large open areas. Multi-strobe installations utilize synchronization modules to flash in perfect unison, preventing photosensitive epileptic seizures among occupants.
Wiring & System Compatibility
  • Conventional (2-Wire/4-Wire): In a 2-wire setup, the sounder and strobe run off a single Notification Appliance Circuit (NAC) and activate simultaneously. A 4-wire configuration allows the control panel to silence the horn while keeping the strobe flashing.
  • Addressable Sounder Bases: Advanced systems integrate the sounder strobe directly into the base of a smoke detector, assigning it a unique digital address for highly localized, programmable evacuation sequences.
